Personality & Traits

Personal History The story of James Phoenix is a rather complex one to say the least. For most of his childhood, his parents were gone for various reasons. Work, business, or other reasons unknown to James and his sister, Nicole. Eventually, his parents spent more time with him and Nicole. It appeared that they had redeemed themselves to James and Nicole. Everything was thought to be good. Or so they thought. It turned out to be a lie. Their parents ended up returning to whatever they did, which was unknown to James and Nicole at the time. They became more distant to them with no true explanation. Then, the worst of their absence occurred. The inevitable happened. They disappeared with no explanation. No trace. The Phoenix children were left to fend for themselves. Nicole was forced to quit school and take care of James, who was just beginning high school.

James spent most of his early days in high school alone. He didn’t have many friends and he acted out on a few different occasions. Even if he was alone, he still kept himself occupied. He took up an interest in tinkering with automobiles and he occasionally watched science fiction programs. He had friends, but he was still more or less distant from them. This all changed when he met Ashlynn Regan. Disliking each other at first, they eventually grew to be very close friends with each other. In fact, the two would later find out that they actually knew each other when they were in grade school. They went through everything together. Hell and back. After they graduated, Ash went to college and James went into a job as an auto mechanic. Although they were never far from each other. They were almost inseparable. Many thought as though they were even in a relationship, when they actually weren’t. Either way they would follow each other through the thick and thin. Especially in space.

As Ash was studying to be a researcher and scientist, she received a unique opportunity to go to outer space. A mission to Mars called Alpha Three. Given the advancements and innovation in technology and science that went into this specific mission, she was actually able to bring a plus one, given they had some ability they could bring to a crew in space. James Phoenix was a mechanic. And he was a damn good one too. After their primary training at NASA, they began their preparations for the mission for a slated launch in late 2024. The launch was a success in the hope of a successful mission. They would be gone for between as little as a year and as long as three years in space. But no matter the mission length, they would be gone for a far greater amount of time.

Alpha Three was primarily meant to be a scientific colonization mission to Mars. It was one of the biggest and highly advanced missions of the time. So many new technologies. Experimental cryo-stasis tubes, artificial gravity, although it was pretty basic. The colony this Alpha mission would continue to build was very intuitive. It was a mission for the history books, just like the Europa mission. Just not in a positive manner. On April 5th, 2025, the mission went horribly sideways about halfway between Earth and Mars. The accident was caused by a CO2 buildup in the engines. It tore the ship apart in the course of a few minutes. Back then escape pods in space didn’t really exist. So initially when the crew found out about the buildup, they thought they had no way off the ship. Except for the experimental cryo-stasis tubes. The mission commander, who was also a Colonel, ordered the evacuation of Alpha 3 to the cryo-tubes. James and Ash did as they were told, but they couldn’t see anyone else. They made it to the tubes and froze themselves. As the ship was destroyed, they drifted out of the wreckage into open space with the protection of the stasis they were in. What would have been two years adrift max, turned into 353 years for the both of them. But they would be apart from each other for much longer.

James was discovered deep in Federation space by the USS Saturn. When he was unfrozen, his first words out of stasis were “Where’s Ash?” Unfortunately, that question wouldn’t be answered for some time. Upon arrival back to Earth, everything had changed. His loved ones had died. He lost his best friend. He was alone. He had the opportunity to join Starfleet, but he waited two years, so he could get himself acclimated to society again. And to pull himself together emotionally. In 2380, he applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted.

Despite his background in mechanics, he pursued tactical and security studies as a major, and command as a minor. The reason for the switch was because engineering and mechanics had changed so much since the 21st century. If he was going to spend much time re-learning something, he’d rather learn something new. But deep down, it was really guilt. Even though he never did anything wrong. His academy days came and went. Even though he had great experiences during those days, he was often lost and sometimes distracted. Despite this, he graduated from the academy with honors at the rank of Ensign.

His first posting was aboard a small station, known as Deep Space 2, close to the border of the Federation. It wasn’t his Academy Junior Year cadet assignment to the Enterprise, but it was more or less quiet and it was something he enjoyed. He served at Deep Space 2 as a Security Officer for just one year before he transferred to Earth Spacedock as a Tactical and Security Officer. Starfleet had wanted to boost its security on installations, especially since the attacks on Utopia Planitia had gone down just months before. Phoenix and many others were transferred to places like ESD to boost security. It was a more or less uneventful assignment for James. But he worked his way through it. In 2386, he had the opportunity to request a transfer and so he did. This time it was to an actual starship. Another Sovereign Class. The USS Washington.

Despite being a junior officer on the Washington, James participated in a few large missions in his first year. The first two years of being commissioned were quiet. That would change once he transferred. The first mission, which was one that would reach his breaking point, was to the mirror universe. The Washington was docked at DS9 for shoreleave and requisitions. One of the tasks that needed to be done was to transfer a few runabouts from the Washington to the station for upgrades. However things didn’t go to plan as the runabouts experienced core breaches. During the emergency transport, those on the runabouts were switched with their mirror universe counterparts, who were a part of the Terran Rebellion opposing the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. However Terok Nor was run by the alliance and those from the Washington found themselves captured. Other people from the Rebellion had been incarcerated by the Alliance. One of them was non other than the mirror counterpart of Ashlynn Regan, who wasn’t on great terms with the mirror James Phoenix. Long story short, the Washington officers managed to escape the mirror universe with the help of some people from that universe. However, while trying to escape Ash was killed. This tore Phoenix apart even if it wasn’t “his” Ash. He had now lost her twice and in the prime universe he still hadn’t found her. But this meant that she could very well be alive in the prime 24th century. When he returned he made it his mission to find her even if information on her was classified to him due to a cover up that would be uncovered years later.

He participated in a few other missions during his tenure on the Washington and had experienced other, questionable incidents. One such being transported to the 21st Century with his shipmates with the task of fixing the future. This also took a toll on him because he had to relive some of his past while trying to stop the future from being changed. He served on the Washington until 2388 when he was promoted to a position on the USS Odyssey as her Assistant Security/Tactical Officer. Between 2387 and 2393 he eventually found and reunited with Ash, who was also a Starfleet Officer. In 2390 he was promoted to Lieutenant and promoted to the Odyssey's Chief Security/Tactical Officer. James served on the Odyssey for a total of five years and in that time despite the ship being a ship of the line, he and his shipmates didn’t see any major action on the scale that he saw when he was on the Washington.

When 2393 rolled around he received and opportunity to serve on a newer Century Class starship, the USS Horizon, as her Second Officer and Chief of Security and Tactical. It was also around this time that him and Ash finally got together after years of unspoken feelings towards each other. In that first year on the Horizon most things were rather normal and he didn’t see any major action until late 2394 when the Horizon’s former XO was killed in action on a classified mission. Captain Jennifer Dalton, who was the CO since the Horizon’s launch, promoted Phoenix to the position of first officer. James had expected to be in this position for a while before he would even think about his own command. He was wrong.

Two years later in another classified mission, Captain Dalton was abducted by the Tal Shiar in the middle of a skirmish, forcing James to take command. His Captain had been tortured for information regarding the Federation but she withheld everything, which nearly killed her. But thanks to Phoenix and the Horizon crew, she was saved just in time. Upon return to port, during her recovery, Captain Dalton was given a promotion to the admiralty. Her first act was a recommendation of promotion directly to Captain and a recommendation to command the Horizon.

He commanded the Horizon until 2397 when he was requested by one of his sister’s descendants, Vice Admiral Raelyn Mckenzie, to be the temporary Head of Starfleet Security. During that time the Horizon was in drydock around Andoria Prime to receive repairs and a minor refit with new upgrades. Due to most of his crew transferring, Ash, who was his Chief Science Officer, took command until he returned. Once a replacement was found for the Chief of Starfleet Security, James transferred back to the Horizon as her Commanding Officer once again. To be continued…
